Preso’s Report

Congratulations to Angi & Amy on the birth of their beautiful daughter Sophie on Tuesday, 10th October. Sophie weighed in a whopping 3.55 kgs or 7.81 lbs in the old money. All three are doing just fine.

We have secured a site at this year’s Brisbane Water Oyster Festival to sell tickets in our 2017 Christmas Raffle. First prize is a ‘Big Boys Boards’ 9’1″ malibu featuring the new ‘Shapers’ Spine-Tek technology. Second prize is two nights accommodation at the Mantra, Ettalong Beach (Sun – Thurs). Third prize is a ‘Karcher’ 1600psi high pressure washer. The festival is on Sunday, 12th November, 2017 on the Ettalong Beach foreshore. Members, please let me know if you can help out selling tickets for a few hours on the day. I will require some assistance for the setup prior to 8am and with packing up at the end of the day at 4pm. It is a very enjoyable day with plenty to keep you occupied.

For the benefit of those who didn’t read last month’s newsletter I will repeat the info regarding the Old Mal & Presentation Night.  Both are to be held on the same day, Sunday, 26th November. At the Old Mal, we will run the bbq on the beach as per a usual comp (with a few alterations to the  memu) rather than having the seafood lunch back at the Ettalong Bowling Club like we previously did, as we need to set up for the presentation night which will be held in the Ettalong Alfresco Brasserie inside the club. Dinner is provided for you and your partner and will be served at 6pm. We will be serving the alternate steak and chicken meals so if anyone has any special dietry needs please let me know so I can arrange it. I will also require the numbers so please let me know if you will be attending.

The Old Mal results will not be given until the presentation. The surfboards for the Old Mal contest are provided.

As of 2016, the Long John Memorial Old Mal contest is only open to financial members, financial social members and non-financial life members.

Please note that the 2018 season commences with a new January contest, that being Sunday 28th. Previously the Annual General Meeting was conducted on the last Sunday in January so that will now be held on the first Sunday in February (4th) at the Ettalong Bowling Club commencing at 2pm.

I thank our assistant contest director Regan Russell who has written his first contest report on the following page.

The Russell Report – September contest

The predicted North East swell arrived leaving the water ‘pond like’ at Umina. A quick impromptu committee meeting was conducted in front of the Umina surf club and a quorum came to the conclusion that a change was as good as a holiday, thus Killcare was worth a look. Several members would not be available for a first weekend in November make up competition anyway, with planned holidays and a clash with the Woolgoolga Longboard Classic and the Harrington Hotel ‘non comp’ at Crowdy Head. A few still go up to Harrington on the same weekend to surf (and drink) with some of the Salty Malibu Club crew anyway.  It would have been a shame to just cancel the September competition so we met at the middle track of the carpark near the Killcare surf club.

The water was cold enough to worry a brass monkey. Out of the water, with a hint of summer on its way, the temperature was enough to reinforce the term “steamer” wetsuit. The waves were decent for the first heat but after the wind died down, for most of the second round heats the wave quality dropped with it.

Craig “El Mexican” Palmer and Darrell Young both found some lumber on the beach with Craig having to dig some out from under his toenail while Darrell just lost some bark.
Corey Barnes (Shultz) scored quite a few good waves in his first heat winning first place but Mitch Conwell continued to dominate with his usual flair, yet again taking out the first place overall against all the other round one winners.

It took until the second heat for Artie, Liz, Regan, Gavin and Olivia to adjust to the cold water and warm up enough to show stronger performances in their second round.

We assembled on the beach for a group photo for the 2018 OBMC calendar but we will take one more at the October comp and choose the best one for next year’s calendar.

Afterwards Craig Coulton, dragging a leg rope behind him while carrying his board up the beach from the group photo fell foul of the dreaded leg rope tugging sand shark.

Mitch took his young son out on the board with his son mastering the art of the ‘tall tales of barrels’.

Angi brought Amy along for the day to show off her expanding family. We wish them both all the delights of parenthood.
