March OBMC contest – 7am, Sunday, 26th March

Preso’s Report

The inaugural ‘Central Coast Charity Longboard Challenge’ was held at Shelly Beach on Sunday, 22nd February in lumpy, small surf, with the threat of thunderstorms hanging around most of the day. Luckily for us, having just been informed by the head lifeguard they would be closing the beach shortly as one of the storms approached, it took a sharp turn left and headed inland about two kilometres before reaching us and we managed to get through the whole day with only one brief shower that wasn’t heavy enough to disrupt anything.

With the addition of the Central Coast Malibu Club into the mix, all clubs appeared to enjoy the day and it was good to meet some of the new ‘personalities’. Most importantly, a total of $1,600 was raised on the day and given to a young Shelly Beach couple who are going through a very rough time with their child’s cancer treatment.

Wallarah Longboard Club retained their title as the premier club on the ‘Coast’, running up a clear lead over their rivals until a late comeback by Central Coast closed the gap in the last couple heats. The friendly rivalry between Ocean Beach and Shelly Beach (neither of us cares who wins overall, we just want to beat each other as the concept originated between the two clubs and the original trophies are still up for grabs between these two clubs) continues with Shelly Beach taking out third place ahead of OB. Don’t let that fool you though as OB still came home with both trophies. Yes, for the second time we successfully managed to steal the trophy (well actually we won it in the raffle – they just didn’t notice we took their trophy instead of a raffle prize). It was missing the lifestyle on the peninsula so it did a bit of a tour over the next couple of days and had some photographs taken around town before heading back up to the northern end of the coast. If you haven’t seen them, the photos are on the OBMC facebook page.

The upcoming March contest will be the final 7am start until September as we revert to an 8am start over the cooler, darker months of April through to August.

Peter Walsh once again filmed some of the February 29 contest for us and the videos will be available for sale at the March comp for just $5 each. The video includes a bonus session at Noosa that Pete filmed recently.

Several members forgot their membership fees last comp so please remember to bring it with you this time as this is most important for insurance purposes. If you choose to pay your membership by direct deposit please remember to include your name in the reference field.  Snr male – $60, female – $40, fulltime primary or secondary student –  $10 and social – $35.

Account details are: Ocean Beach Malibu Club: St George Bank, Woy Woy, BSB: 112879, ACC: 119456970

New members are most welcome. An 8ft minimum length mal is applicable to senior male surfers while both juniors (under 16) and females may ride any size board as long as it is of Malibu shape (at the contest director’s discretion). Please note that most longboard clubs have a minimum 9ft requirement.

Our assistant contest director Dave Hiscock has taken over the duty of writing our monthly contest report from Garry Halliday and we thank ‘Hands’ for his contribution over many years.

Cheers,
Craig C.

Dave’s February contest report.

We were greeted with grey skies and bumpy onshore conditions for our February contest but there were still some full but fun waves for those prepared to wait and choose wisely.

First up we had Luke, Garth, Terry, John, and Rob in the water, with Luke posting a solid win to start the day.
Second heat had Liz Ambler and a couple of the clubs young guns, Josh Stewart and Olivia Edwards in the water along with a not so young Darrell and myself.  Josh got off to a flying start and just kept going, picking up a stack of waves on his way to his first heat win, and a spot in the final. Well done Josh!  Olivia got some nice ones as well, and was pipped into second spot by a late good scoring wave to Darrell, with myself and Liz rounding the placings.

Heat 3 saw Shultzie (is this the boardriders comp?) rack up a win in bumpy conditions on his ‘shortboard’ edging out Mark Williams. Trevor was not quite able to emulate the feat of his young fella, coming in third followed by Artie and Regan.

The 4th heat saw Gavin Edwards posting a win over Craig C with Mick Day and Scotty Cryer coming third and fourth respectively.
The final heat of the first round saw Mitch winning with another typical fine display. Hands came in second. Are we witnessing a changing of the guard? Craig Palmer and Alan Copelin filled the last two spots.

The second round heats saw a dropping tide bring us more closeouts but still some surfable waves for the patient or lucky.
The 5th’s saw Liz rack up a win over Rob and Regan. The 4th’s saw a win to myself with Alan, Artie and John Rodney placing 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
In the 3rd’s, a win to Craig Palmer was well deserved. Mick Day in second, Terry third, Trevor Stewart fourth and Olivia fifth. Although it shouldn’t be long before we see her finish higher up the placings.Getting towards the business end with the 2nd’s had Garth posting a win over both Hands and Craig Coulton. Was Hands calling for a steward’s enquiry?  Mark Williams and young (yeah right) Darrell took out the minor places.

The final saw the toughest conditions of the day with the low tide bring more closeouts. An injured Mitch surfed as normal with an array of backwards take-offs, followed by stylish turns and reos, and was looking good for another first place but for a couple of very nice nose rides from Luke saw him take out his first final. Corey finished third, Gavin fourth, and Josh in fifth in his first final.
