Preso’s Report

Firstly I would like to wish all of our members, sponsors & everyone who supports the OBMC in so many different ways a very merry Christmas & a happy, healthy & prosperous 2017.

I would also like to thank all surfers who contributed throughout the year to the set up & packing up of the contest equipment. The way everyone shared the process in 2016 was commented on by Peter Walsh who was filming for us at the November contest. The dvd of that contest can be purchased from Ken Darby (0410 626 803) for just $5. It is worth the $5 just for the animated segment Peter has included at the end of the contest.  Hopefully Peter will be filming a few more contests for us in 2017 so let’s hope Huey gives us better conditions than was on hand for the November comp. Thanks also to the OBMC committee for their effort in making 2016 another successful year for the club.

Please note that while yet not confirmed, it is most likely the old Three Way Charity Challenge will be a four club event from now on with Central Coast Malibu Club joining the OBMC, Wallarah & Shelly Beach in making the event a true Central Coast challenge. The format for the four club event is yet to be confirmed but the change of date has been confirmed as Sunday, 19th February regardless of how many clubs compete.

The 2016 OBMC Christmas Raffle was a huge success for the club with sales totalling $1,906. Thank you to those members who both bought & sold tickets, especially to the members who helped out with the street sales in Umina. The lucky winner of the 1st prize 9’4” logger donated by Corey Barnes at Big Boys Boards was Dave Hiscock (ticket 0811). 2nd prize was won by Umina resident Paul Coghlan (ticket 2357) & 3rd prize by another Umina resident, Tim Berryman (ticket 0979).

The 2016 Long John Memorial Old Mal Day was held on Sunday, 4th December in small waves, filling up into a deep hole on the higher tide. With the GRUBS having the choice of banks on the day and picking the much better left hander next to us, it was a race to move our flags to incorporate that break as soon as they finished their comp around 10.30am. Round one winners were Craig Coulton, Bryce Williams, Garry Halliday and Richie McClelland and round two saw Gary Sing, Mark Williams, Bryce Williams and Ron Stockings victorious. ‘Stocko’ needed a little convincing to compete and was the surprise surfer on the day, mastering the heavy old mals with ease, convincingly winning his second round heat in one of the best displays of the day.

Semi final 1 consisted of Bryce Williams, Richie McClelland, Mark Rylands, Craig Coulton and Craig Palmer with Bryce and Richie progressing to the final. Semi final 2 had Gary Sing, Garry Halliday, Ron Stockings, Mark Williams and Darrell Young battling it out with ‘Singy Snr’ and ‘Hands’ Halliday filling the last two places to contest the final.

Gary Sing showed us who’s boss on the old mals, finally getting to hold the old toilet seat high. Yes, our old mal perpetual trophy is made from one of the wooden toilet seats from the old Manly Ferry ‘Dee Why’. Take a look at the photos of the trophy on our facebook page and you will see the resemblance. It is reshaped a little so it’s not a dead giveaway. Garry Halliday was the runner up with Richie 3rd and Bryce 4th.

The presentation was held in the outdoor bbq area at the Ettalong Bowling Club where Ken Darby, along with John and Mel Sharpe cooked a fantastic seafood Christmas treat for us all. Thank you guys, it was certainly enjoyed by everyone and your efforts very much appreciated.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Craig C.

Hands’ contest report – 27/11/16

Waiting to greet the contestants for the November comp was what could only be described as the most deplorable surfing conditions in years. Most got back in their cars and drove off home back to bed. Fifty knot onshore winds with rain squalls and two metre closeouts at the Umina end of the beach. There were only one metre closeouts at the Ocean Beach end, so we set up the comp there!

Lucky Mitch Conwell drew heat one. He miked his first wave finding some reforming faces, pulled off two great re-entries and threw in three nose rides scoring high sevens from the judges. All the other surfers’ spirits lifted with each wave he caught. His last wave was his best but it didn’t count as he had already exceeded his ten wave quota.

Darrell Young continued his good form winning the second heat with a ‘Stewart’ father/son combo fighting over the minor places, Josh letting dad Trevor win so he could get a ride home (smart move) as it’s a long walk carrying a surfboard. In heat three, with Richie McClelland getting a screamer of a right hander and ‘Jack’ (Mark Williams) nearly as good a left, I was in a lot of trouble. Lucky for me the boys didn’t get a second high scoring wave and I just scraped home in first place.

In heat four, Craig Coulton did a “Mitch’ catching the slightly smaller waves and picking up good points on the reforming lefts. Heat five saw another family match up with the ‘Edwards’ father/daughter combo. Olivia also thinking it was far too long a walk home so she let her old man Gavin have first place. Watching Olivia surfing I think it is only a matter of time before she will be beating dad and the rest of us.

In the second round things didn’t improve much. Mitch stuck to his game plan, catching the smaller waves, working the reforms to the beach, racking up the points. I couldn’t hold any of my re-entries on the bigger sets but managed some great wipe outs! I just did enough to claim second place, holding off Craig Coulton by just half a point, Gavin Edwards another half a point behind him with Darrell Young in fifth spot.

In the battle of the seconds, Olivia was unlucky not to beat Corey Barnes, she just couldn’t finish off her rides. Corey 1st, Olivia 2nd, Richie 3rd and Trevor 4th in one of his best results. He must like surfing in trying conditions. Mark Williams won the third’s and Artie Kopylov the fourth’s to complete the day.

After we finished and had packed up all the gear the wind slowly moved around further to the north and by mid-afternoon the waves were ‘going off’ with the Box absolutely pumping. It looked like a completely different beach. I guess that’s life!!
