Preso’s Report

Three OBMC surfers progressed to the finals of the 2017 Magoo Charity Classic held at Soldiers Beach over the weekend of the 6th & 7th May.

In the Open 9ft it was Mitch Conwell flying the flag for the OBMC, placing 6th against some very tough opposition. Bryce Williams was another to record a 6th place in the Open Logger event, won by ex OBMC member Tom Payne. The best result for the club though was from Mark Williams who placed 3rd in the final of the over 55’s. Congratulations to all who competed on the great results.

We wish all OBMC surfers who are competing in the Crescent Head Malibu Classic this week the very best of luck and hopefully ‘Huey’ will do the right thing and provide some decent waves for the event.

The Ettalong Bowling Club is again putting on their annual ‘Beer School’ whereby you get to sample a variety of delicious foods and learn which style of beer are best suited to those foods. You will also learn how to make the different styles of beer should you choose to ‘home brew’. Each beer you sample is not just a taste, but a stubbie, so don’t plan on driving home. The club does run a courtesy bus. Last year was lots of fun and laughter. ‘Beer School’ is on Sunday 4th June, commencing at 2.30pm. Tickets are $25 each but this represents great value for the quality of food, along with the number of different beers you get to sample. It would be good if we can get a group together to enjoy the afternoon. Let me know if you are keen.

April contest report

It was great to see long time member Phil Bruce make a welcome return to the surfing scene after a few years absence. Phil’s surfing unfortunately has suffered a little during the break but with regular stints back in the water, I’m sure he will be competitive again in no time.

Thirty one surfers contested the April competition held in rapidly varying conditions in size, shape and direction. Mitch Conwell increased his lead in the club championship winning the final from Bryce Williams with Garry (Hands) Halliday in third place. Richie McClelland, Garth Willison and Mark Williams made up the balance of the first round winners.

The Edwards family duo of dad Gavin and daughter Olivia continued their rapidly improving form of late with Gavin taking out the 2nd’s from Craig Coulton and Corey Barnes while Olivia won the 4th’s from Deb Stening and Tony Irwin. Darrell Young won the 3rd’s ahead of Ron Stockings and Alan Copelin while Josh Stewart was too good for the rest of the field, winning the 5th’s decisively from Rob Baranic in second and Daryl (Ozzie) Anderson in third place.

Cheers,

Craig C.

March OBMC contest – 7am, Sunday, 26th March

Preso’s Report

The inaugural ‘Central Coast Charity Longboard Challenge’ was held at Shelly Beach on Sunday, 22nd February in lumpy, small surf, with the threat of thunderstorms hanging around most of the day. Luckily for us, having just been informed by the head lifeguard they would be closing the beach shortly as one of the storms approached, it took a sharp turn left and headed inland about two kilometres before reaching us and we managed to get through the whole day with only one brief shower that wasn’t heavy enough to disrupt anything.

With the addition of the Central Coast Malibu Club into the mix, all clubs appeared to enjoy the day and it was good to meet some of the new ‘personalities’. Most importantly, a total of $1,600 was raised on the day and given to a young Shelly Beach couple who are going through a very rough time with their child’s cancer treatment.

Wallarah Longboard Club retained their title as the premier club on the ‘Coast’, running up a clear lead over their rivals until a late comeback by Central Coast closed the gap in the last couple heats. The friendly rivalry between Ocean Beach and Shelly Beach (neither of us cares who wins overall, we just want to beat each other as the concept originated between the two clubs and the original trophies are still up for grabs between these two clubs) continues with Shelly Beach taking out third place ahead of OB. Don’t let that fool you though as OB still came home with both trophies. Yes, for the second time we successfully managed to steal the trophy (well actually we won it in the raffle – they just didn’t notice we took their trophy instead of a raffle prize). It was missing the lifestyle on the peninsula so it did a bit of a tour over the next couple of days and had some photographs taken around town before heading back up to the northern end of the coast. If you haven’t seen them, the photos are on the OBMC facebook page.

The upcoming March contest will be the final 7am start until September as we revert to an 8am start over the cooler, darker months of April through to August.

Peter Walsh once again filmed some of the February 29 contest for us and the videos will be available for sale at the March comp for just $5 each. The video includes a bonus session at Noosa that Pete filmed recently.

Several members forgot their membership fees last comp so please remember to bring it with you this time as this is most important for insurance purposes. If you choose to pay your membership by direct deposit please remember to include your name in the reference field.  Snr male – $60, female – $40, fulltime primary or secondary student –  $10 and social – $35.

Account details are: Ocean Beach Malibu Club: St George Bank, Woy Woy, BSB: 112879, ACC: 119456970

New members are most welcome. An 8ft minimum length mal is applicable to senior male surfers while both juniors (under 16) and females may ride any size board as long as it is of Malibu shape (at the contest director’s discretion). Please note that most longboard clubs have a minimum 9ft requirement.

Our assistant contest director Dave Hiscock has taken over the duty of writing our monthly contest report from Garry Halliday and we thank ‘Hands’ for his contribution over many years.

Cheers,
Craig C.

Dave’s February contest report.

We were greeted with grey skies and bumpy onshore conditions for our February contest but there were still some full but fun waves for those prepared to wait and choose wisely.

First up we had Luke, Garth, Terry, John, and Rob in the water, with Luke posting a solid win to start the day.
Second heat had Liz Ambler and a couple of the clubs young guns, Josh Stewart and Olivia Edwards in the water along with a not so young Darrell and myself.  Josh got off to a flying start and just kept going, picking up a stack of waves on his way to his first heat win, and a spot in the final. Well done Josh!  Olivia got some nice ones as well, and was pipped into second spot by a late good scoring wave to Darrell, with myself and Liz rounding the placings.

Heat 3 saw Shultzie (is this the boardriders comp?) rack up a win in bumpy conditions on his ‘shortboard’ edging out Mark Williams. Trevor was not quite able to emulate the feat of his young fella, coming in third followed by Artie and Regan.

The 4th heat saw Gavin Edwards posting a win over Craig C with Mick Day and Scotty Cryer coming third and fourth respectively.
The final heat of the first round saw Mitch winning with another typical fine display. Hands came in second. Are we witnessing a changing of the guard? Craig Palmer and Alan Copelin filled the last two spots.

The second round heats saw a dropping tide bring us more closeouts but still some surfable waves for the patient or lucky.
The 5th’s saw Liz rack up a win over Rob and Regan. The 4th’s saw a win to myself with Alan, Artie and John Rodney placing 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
In the 3rd’s, a win to Craig Palmer was well deserved. Mick Day in second, Terry third, Trevor Stewart fourth and Olivia fifth. Although it shouldn’t be long before we see her finish higher up the placings.Getting towards the business end with the 2nd’s had Garth posting a win over both Hands and Craig Coulton. Was Hands calling for a steward’s enquiry?  Mark Williams and young (yeah right) Darrell took out the minor places.

The final saw the toughest conditions of the day with the low tide bring more closeouts. An injured Mitch surfed as normal with an array of backwards take-offs, followed by stylish turns and reos, and was looking good for another first place but for a couple of very nice nose rides from Luke saw him take out his first final. Corey finished third, Gavin fourth, and Josh in fifth in his first final.

Preso’s Report

Firstly I would like to wish all of our members, sponsors & everyone who supports the OBMC in so many different ways a very merry Christmas & a happy, healthy & prosperous 2017.

I would also like to thank all surfers who contributed throughout the year to the set up & packing up of the contest equipment. The way everyone shared the process in 2016 was commented on by Peter Walsh who was filming for us at the November contest. The dvd of that contest can be purchased from Ken Darby (0410 626 803) for just $5. It is worth the $5 just for the animated segment Peter has included at the end of the contest.  Hopefully Peter will be filming a few more contests for us in 2017 so let’s hope Huey gives us better conditions than was on hand for the November comp. Thanks also to the OBMC committee for their effort in making 2016 another successful year for the club.

Please note that while yet not confirmed, it is most likely the old Three Way Charity Challenge will be a four club event from now on with Central Coast Malibu Club joining the OBMC, Wallarah & Shelly Beach in making the event a true Central Coast challenge. The format for the four club event is yet to be confirmed but the change of date has been confirmed as Sunday, 19th February regardless of how many clubs compete.

The 2016 OBMC Christmas Raffle was a huge success for the club with sales totalling $1,906. Thank you to those members who both bought & sold tickets, especially to the members who helped out with the street sales in Umina. The lucky winner of the 1st prize 9’4” logger donated by Corey Barnes at Big Boys Boards was Dave Hiscock (ticket 0811). 2nd prize was won by Umina resident Paul Coghlan (ticket 2357) & 3rd prize by another Umina resident, Tim Berryman (ticket 0979).

The 2016 Long John Memorial Old Mal Day was held on Sunday, 4th December in small waves, filling up into a deep hole on the higher tide. With the GRUBS having the choice of banks on the day and picking the much better left hander next to us, it was a race to move our flags to incorporate that break as soon as they finished their comp around 10.30am. Round one winners were Craig Coulton, Bryce Williams, Garry Halliday and Richie McClelland and round two saw Gary Sing, Mark Williams, Bryce Williams and Ron Stockings victorious. ‘Stocko’ needed a little convincing to compete and was the surprise surfer on the day, mastering the heavy old mals with ease, convincingly winning his second round heat in one of the best displays of the day.

Semi final 1 consisted of Bryce Williams, Richie McClelland, Mark Rylands, Craig Coulton and Craig Palmer with Bryce and Richie progressing to the final. Semi final 2 had Gary Sing, Garry Halliday, Ron Stockings, Mark Williams and Darrell Young battling it out with ‘Singy Snr’ and ‘Hands’ Halliday filling the last two places to contest the final.

Gary Sing showed us who’s boss on the old mals, finally getting to hold the old toilet seat high. Yes, our old mal perpetual trophy is made from one of the wooden toilet seats from the old Manly Ferry ‘Dee Why’. Take a look at the photos of the trophy on our facebook page and you will see the resemblance. It is reshaped a little so it’s not a dead giveaway. Garry Halliday was the runner up with Richie 3rd and Bryce 4th.

The presentation was held in the outdoor bbq area at the Ettalong Bowling Club where Ken Darby, along with John and Mel Sharpe cooked a fantastic seafood Christmas treat for us all. Thank you guys, it was certainly enjoyed by everyone and your efforts very much appreciated.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Craig C.

Hands’ contest report – 27/11/16

Waiting to greet the contestants for the November comp was what could only be described as the most deplorable surfing conditions in years. Most got back in their cars and drove off home back to bed. Fifty knot onshore winds with rain squalls and two metre closeouts at the Umina end of the beach. There were only one metre closeouts at the Ocean Beach end, so we set up the comp there!

Lucky Mitch Conwell drew heat one. He miked his first wave finding some reforming faces, pulled off two great re-entries and threw in three nose rides scoring high sevens from the judges. All the other surfers’ spirits lifted with each wave he caught. His last wave was his best but it didn’t count as he had already exceeded his ten wave quota.

Darrell Young continued his good form winning the second heat with a ‘Stewart’ father/son combo fighting over the minor places, Josh letting dad Trevor win so he could get a ride home (smart move) as it’s a long walk carrying a surfboard. In heat three, with Richie McClelland getting a screamer of a right hander and ‘Jack’ (Mark Williams) nearly as good a left, I was in a lot of trouble. Lucky for me the boys didn’t get a second high scoring wave and I just scraped home in first place.

In heat four, Craig Coulton did a “Mitch’ catching the slightly smaller waves and picking up good points on the reforming lefts. Heat five saw another family match up with the ‘Edwards’ father/daughter combo. Olivia also thinking it was far too long a walk home so she let her old man Gavin have first place. Watching Olivia surfing I think it is only a matter of time before she will be beating dad and the rest of us.

In the second round things didn’t improve much. Mitch stuck to his game plan, catching the smaller waves, working the reforms to the beach, racking up the points. I couldn’t hold any of my re-entries on the bigger sets but managed some great wipe outs! I just did enough to claim second place, holding off Craig Coulton by just half a point, Gavin Edwards another half a point behind him with Darrell Young in fifth spot.

In the battle of the seconds, Olivia was unlucky not to beat Corey Barnes, she just couldn’t finish off her rides. Corey 1st, Olivia 2nd, Richie 3rd and Trevor 4th in one of his best results. He must like surfing in trying conditions. Mark Williams won the third’s and Artie Kopylov the fourth’s to complete the day.

After we finished and had packed up all the gear the wind slowly moved around further to the north and by mid-afternoon the waves were ‘going off’ with the Box absolutely pumping. It looked like a completely different beach. I guess that’s life!!

OBMC Newsletter – August 2016

OBMC Newsletter – August 2016

Upcoming events

August contest – 8am, Sunday 28th August

September contest – 7am, Sunday 25th September

Preso’s Report
Firstly I would like to welcome two new surfers to the club, Olivia Edwards and George Pupovac. Olivia is the daughter of Gavin Edwards (sponsor- Gosford Printing). Drawn against each other, both surfed extremely well in their first contest with George just pipping Olivia to win the third heat of the day.

Surfers are reminded that the upcoming August comp is the final 8am start until April 2017. We revert back to a 7am meet throughout the warmer months of September to March.

As most of you would know by now, Erin Judd placed fourth in the final of the junior women at the Australian Longboard Titles held up at Coffs Harbour recently. It was a fantastic result by a very talented surfer and lovely young lady. Congratulations once again Erin!

We will attempt to take the 2017 calendar photo at the September contest so I ask all members to wear their club shirt that day, remembering that we do have two new major sponsors so it would be appropriate to advertise them in the photo.

Cheers,
Craig C.

Hands’ Contest Report – July
With a steely grey sky to the south and a cool breeze blowing off shore, things didn’t look too inviting on the weather front. Looking out to sea, watching closeout after closeout, things didn’t look too inviting on the surfing front either. The only thing that did look good was the ‘Box’, pumping, hollow lefts rolling down the bar one after the other. No one has a boat big enough to fit us all on so we were stuck with the straight- handers on offer. I just picked the shortest walk to set up the gear and get the show on the road. Luck happened to come our way, after setting up, the sun managed to sneak its head out from behind the cloud, warming things up nicely. The surf started to improve as well.

Jack (Mark Williams) took a liking to the bigger waves having a bit more power than normal, getting some good turns and vertical re-entries in winning the first heat. Mitch Conwell was a standout in the second heat finding some nice long lefts. With the judges liking what they saw, he scored well. New member George Pupovac (the Hayden Emery look-a-like) pulled off an ‘EMERY’ performance to win the third heat. Bryce Williams was way too hot for me to handle in the fourth heat, getting some great nose rides.
Round two found Jack M.I.A. He was overheard in the car park saying he didn’t want to show Bryce up in the final by kicking his ass!! He left it up to the younger surfers to fight it out. Mitch was looking the winner early in the heat, seeming to catch a wave every minute. He had some good scores on the judges sheets and was going to be hard to beat. Bryce just waited for quality, not quantity. With Mitch running out of scoring waves, Bryce got the ride of the day, just pipping Mitch with only a minute left on the clock. Mitch’s last wave was probably the heat winner but didn’t score as he had already used his ten wave quota.

Gavin got some high scores to beat me in the 2nd’s. Angi Smith had Craig Coulton in her sights, ready to take another big scalp but Craig played his get out of jail card and pulled a great left hander off at the end of the heat to keep her at bay. Luke Dalton and Garth Willison had a great tussle for the points, with Luke getting the win in the 4th’s.

By the time the 5th’s got wet for the second time the surf had dropped right off and had turned to crap. Daryl, Arty and Trevor should have got some bonus points just for going out. Well done guys, showing some real club spirit! (Scotch or Vodka?)

Preso’s Report

With only three more contests to go in the 2016 season it’s time to start thinking about the annual presentation night which once again will be conducted in the Ettalong Bowling Club auditorium, preceded by dinner in the Alfresco Brasserie. Please make a note of Sunday, 13th November so you don’t make alternative plans. Dinner will commence at 6pm and we should all be tucked up in bed by around 9pm so it won’t be a late night.

Since Tony Irwin’s retirement from surfboard manufacture several members have asked me where they can get surfboard repairs done. Shultz (Corey Barnes – Big Boys Boards) has come to the rescue for us. You can drop your board off at his shop at Ettalong and he will take it up to Simmo for a professional repair and bring it back to his shop for you to collect. Simmo used to own ‘The Surf Shop’ at Fountain Plaza, Erina throughout the 2000’s and is known for the quality of his repairs. Big Boys Boards are located at 2/400 Ocean View Rd, Ettalong Beach (up the rear stairs opposite the post office). Corey can be contacted on 0425 264 633. Be very careful taking your board up the steps….

Well on the fourth attempt we finally got to hold the postponed April contest in very small conditions but thankfully the swell did increase throughout the morning. The fact that it was now July meant only 20 surfers braved the chilly conditions. On his short home visit from the Australian Navy, Bryce Williams showed he has lost none of his surfing skills taking out maximum points for the day from Mitch Conwell, Corey Barnes and Richie McClelland. Garry Halliday won the 2nd’s ahead of Garth Willison and Craig Coulton, Angi Smith the 3rd’s from Scott Cryer and Jim Kerrison, Mark Williams the 4th’s ahead of Deb Stening and Al Copelin and Terry Wilson the 5th’s from newcomer Regan Russell and Liz Ambler.

By my records all financial members have received their club shirt for 2016 and those eligible, their club hoodie. If you have not can you please advise me & yes Jack, you do have all of yours….

See you at the comp on Sunday,

Craig C.

Hands’ Contest Report – June.

With snow covering Blackwall Mountain and the Barrenjoey Lighthouse we all knew winter had hit with vengeance. All we needed was some silly fool to go surfing. Darrell Young’s name was the one called out. If he made it back after the first heat the rest of us would give it a go. All he had to do was avoid the large ice chunks that were floating in the bay after breaking free from the Hawkesbury River Glacier.

The waves were a bit tricky with some good size sets. If you got caught inside you got worked pretty hard. Not only did Darrell make it back to the beach but he ended up winning the first heat. With the ‘champ’ back in town, the surfers in the second heat were taught a surfing lesson. Hayden Emery was back with a show stopping win. The ‘Doctor’ won the third heat, he too getting a couple of high scores. Mitch Conwell handled the bigger sets with ease and also scored well with his two highest rides.

Round two found the waves closing out a bit more with the ones that were holding up earlier a lot harder to find. The battle of the first round winners was going to be a real treat to watch. I had to feel a bit sorry for Darrell going up against this class act. Mitch must have been feeling confident after his good form from the last few comps but hadn’t taken on the ‘Emery’ before. As the heat progressed a dark horse emerged with ‘Doctor’ Sing delivering again, wave after wave, long nose rides and smooth turns. With only minutes remaining in the heat Hayden pulled a rabbit out of the hat, or was that a hare out of the ass and does a ‘Singy’ on ‘Singy’, getting a nine point ride right on the hooter to win the heat. Mitch had to settle for third place with Darrell in fourth place. Still good points…

Jack (Mark Williams) took a liking to the bigger waves winning the seconds ahead of Luke Dalton and Craig Coulton. I was lucky to beat Richie in the thirds after he caught two long right handers. Prematurely the heat ended, only to restart after waves washed through the camp site. Luckily the heat was back on and I managed to get two lefts back to back after getting an easy paddle back out before the heat ended again. All a bit confusing?  Angi Smith showed the boys how to surf by winning the fourths. Mick Day took out the fifth’s and everyone who got wet on the day came away with a prize….hypothermia.

OBMC Newsletter – June 2016

OBMC Newsletter – June 2016

Upcoming events

June contest – 8am, Sunday 26th June.
Postponed April contest – 8am, Sunday, 3rd July.

Preso’s Report

Well our third attempt to hold the postponed April contest just happened to coincide with the ‘East Coast Low’ which washed away half of the beaches on the entire NSW coastline, hence attempt number four will be on July 3. We did however manage to get the May comp in the weekend before with the occasional head high wave still remaining from the rapidly decreasing swell. With several surfers competing up at Crescent Head and the winter chill taking effect, only 20 surfers braved the conditions. The new club hoodies were certainly appreciated and everyone seemed very happy with the choice of colour.

We welcomed another new member at the May contest, Gillian Moran, further boosting the ladies contingent. Gillian goes alright too and isn’t the least bit tentative of taking on some solid surf. She also recently discovered the long paddle to a secret spot whereby she was introduced to the wave of her life. Three other new signings yet to surf with us in a contest but are well known around Umina SLSC are Nicki Petronovic, along with Amanda and Rick Boylan. Although yet to surf with us they did a grand job representing the club at the Ettalong Bowlo’s ‘Beer School’ last month along with Mel, Sharpy and myself. If it’s held again next year make the effort to go. It will be the best value $15 you will spend and you learn a bit too. Don’t plan to drive home though…

A few results from recent contests you may be interested by in which both past and present OBMC members competed:

Magoo Charity Classic
Erin Judd – 3rd Woman’s final and 4th Under 18’s final.
Tom Payne – 1st Old Mal and 3rd Log.
Hayden Emery – 4th Old Mal.

Crescent Head Classic
Angi Smith – 5th Ladies over 35’s.
Mark Williams – 6th over 55’s.

Snowy McAlister Festival
Hayden Emery – 1st Mystery.
Gus O’Malley – 2nd Junior Log.
Tom Payne – 6th Open Log.

Members who are yet to receive their club shirts and/or hoodie and cannot make it to either of the next two contests can ring me on 0412 616 368 to arrange pick up.

See ya’s Sunday!

Cheers,

Craig C.

Hands’ contest report – May.

With a real bite in the south westerly blowing through the contestant’s ears it was clear that winter was only around the corner. Luckily the water was still quite warm, actually warmer in than out. Twenty brave souls were keen to pay up and paddle out. The sets were closing out but the smaller waves in between were producing some nice lefts and rights.

The first heat in the water found the ‘Doctor’ Sing weaving his magic with some great scoring rides, beating me with ease. I was lucky to hold off ‘Shultz’ who got a great right hander, taking off inside the ‘Doctor’ and ripping off a carving cut back off the lip in front of us. Dave Hiscock and Darrell Young went wave for wave in the second heat with Dave coming away with the win. Mitch Conwell continued his good form with a convincing win in the third heat. Alan Copelin won the fourth heat, making his first final. Well done Al.

Round two had the 1st’s going into the water to start things off. The sets were dropping off by the minute and the tide was filling in the smaller waves making it all a little bit tricky. The ‘Doctor’ and Mitch were having a great battle with Mitch getting the upper hand and looked to have it won until the final seconds. The ‘Doctor’, with only one scoring ride remaining took off just before the hooter and delivered the ride of the heat, a right hander all the way to the beach, stepping off on the sand and snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Mitch in second place, Dave and Al both surfing in their first final, saw Dave in third place and Al finishing in fourth spot. Al is now thinking of opening his pro surfing school.

I took out the 2nd’s over Craig Coulton with Deb Stening coming home in third place, also her best performance since joining the club. Terry Wilson just beat ‘Shultz’ in the 3rd’s with Arty Kopylov scoring the highest point wave but just couldn’t get a second wave. A white water foamy would have won it for him. Darrell ‘Michael Peterson’ Young appeared from the sand dunes, paddled out and won the 4th’s leaving Scotty Cryer wondering where the hell did he came from, I had this heat won! Mick Day found some nice reforms to outpoint Trevor Stewart and win the 5th’s while Mel Sharpe & Billy Burke created a new club record with neither surfer catching a wave in the heat so it was impossible to do a wave count back to separate them.
