OBMC Newsletter – December 2017

Upcoming events

Next contest: 7am, Sunday, 28th January, 2018,
followed by the annual Central Coast Charity Longboard Challenge
to be held at Catherine Hill Bay on Sunday, 4th February, 2018.

Preso’s Report

Firstly I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of our 2017 sponsors for their generous support throughout the year and to wish each of you,  your families and staff a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

I would also like to introduce three new sponsors for the 2018 season. Brett Wakelin is well known to the longer term members in the club, being our club champion back in 2008. Brett and brother Troy will be sponsoring under the banner of the WSG Group which specialise in plumbing, electrical and roofing. John Wilson who has been surfing with us for five years now has also come on as a sponsor with his business John Wilson Carpentry Services. Between the two companies we have most of your building requirements covered. Sally Oman surfed with us for a while several years ago before leaving the area. Sally has returned in a big way as the owner-operator of Sals Surf School, teaching our future members how to commence the best lifestyle in the world.

For those who have already received their 2018 OBMC calendar, please note that the dates between the AGM and the Central Coast Charity Longboard Challenge (CCCLC) have been swapped. The CCCLC against Shelly Beach Malibu Club, Wallarah Longboard Club and Central Coast Malibu Club is now on February 4 at Catherine Hill Bay and the annual general meeting is on at 2pm, Sunday, February 18 at the Ettalong Bowling Club.

Our board sponsor BIG BOYS BOARDS has just moved into a new shopfront premises, sharing the shop with the Ettalong Barber. The new shop is located at 2/271 Ocean View Rd, Ettalong Beach. The barber, Kevin Ellis, also a longboard surfer, has been selling boards at his barber shop for several years and will now be handling BIG BOYS BOARDS sales as well, so for all of your wetsuit, wax, legropes, deckgrips or even a new or used board, long or short, drop in and have a chat with Corey or Kevin.

The 2017 Brisbane Water Oyster Festival was a huge success for us selling tickets in our Christmas raffle. Thank you to all who helped out on the day and I remind members that we will be selling tickets on West St, Umina on Saturday 16th December,  until 1.00pm,  when we then move the sales into the Ettalong Bowling Club until the draw at 3.00pm. The raffle will be drawn by the Ettalong Bowling Club duty manager so you still have a chance of winning a Big Boys Boards 9’2” malibu, a two night stay at the Mantra, Ettalong Beach or a Karcher high pressure cleaner.

The Ettalong Alfresco Brasserie hosted our 2017 presentation night on Sunday, November 26, providing us with outstanding meals once again. Not surprisingly, Mitch Conwell took the Club Champion trophy home with him while young Olivia Edwards won the Ladies Club Champion for 2017 in what was a great season for her. Alan Copelin, who is always one of the first to jump in where help is needed won the 2017 Clubman of the Year. Gary Sing successfully defended his Old Mal Champion title, winning the Long John Memorial Old Mal Day earlier that day. Dave Hiscock was the lucky winner of the 9’2” Big Boys Boards malibu in the members’ raffle draw.

The full results of the presentation are:

Under 18’s: 1st Olivia Edwards, 2nd Josh Stewart.

Thanking you all for a very successful 2017 and wishing all of our members, sponsors and friends all the very best for the Christmas period and a very happy and safe new year. OBMC Newsletter – October 2017

Upcoming events

Next contest: 7am, Sunday, 29th October.

Preso’s Report

Congratulations to Angi & Amy on the birth of their beautiful daughter Sophie on Tuesday, 10th October. Sophie weighed in a whopping 3.55 kgs or 7.81 lbs in the old money. All three are doing just fine.

We have secured a site at this year’s Brisbane Water Oyster Festival to sell tickets in our 2017 Christmas Raffle. First prize is a ‘Big Boys Boards’ 9’1″ malibu featuring the new ‘Shapers’ Spine-Tek technology. Second prize is two nights accommodation at the Mantra, Ettalong Beach (Sun – Thurs). Third prize is a ‘Karcher’ 1600psi high pressure washer. The festival is on Sunday, 12th November, 2017 on the Ettalong Beach foreshore. Members, please let me know if you can help out selling tickets for a few hours on the day. I will require some assistance for the setup prior to 8am and with packing up at the end of the day at 4pm. It is a very enjoyable day with plenty to keep you occupied.

For the benefit of those who didn’t read last month’s newsletter I will repeat the info regarding the Old Mal & Presentation Night.  Both are to be held on the same day, Sunday, 26th November. At the Old Mal, we will run the bbq on the beach as per a usual comp (with a few alterations to the  memu) rather than having the seafood lunch back at the Ettalong Bowling Club like we previously did, as we need to set up for the presentation night which will be held in the Ettalong Alfresco Brasserie inside the club. Dinner is provided for you and your partner and will be served at 6pm. We will be serving the alternate steak and chicken meals so if anyone has any special dietry needs please let me know so I can arrange it. I will also require the numbers so please let me know if you will be attending.

The Old Mal results will not be given until the presentation. The surfboards for the Old Mal contest are provided.

As of 2016, the Long John Memorial Old Mal contest is only open to financial members, financial social members and non-financial life members.

Please note that the 2018 season commences with a new January contest, that being Sunday 28th. Previously the Annual General Meeting was conducted on the last Sunday in January so that will now be held on the first Sunday in February (4th) at the Ettalong Bowling Club commencing at 2pm.

I thank our assistant contest director Regan Russell who has written his first contest report on the following page.

Cheers,

Craig C.

The Russell Report – September contest

The predicted North East swell arrived leaving the water ‘pond like’ at Umina. A quick impromptu committee meeting was conducted in front of the Umina surf club and a quorum came to the conclusion that a change was as good as a holiday, thus Killcare was worth a look. Several members would not be available for a first weekend in November make up competition anyway, with planned holidays and a clash with the Woolgoolga Longboard Classic and the Harrington Hotel ‘non comp’ at Crowdy Head. A few still go up to Harrington on the same weekend to surf (and drink) with some of the Salty Malibu Club crew anyway.  It would have been a shame to just cancel the September competition so we met at the middle track of the carpark near the Killcare surf club.

The water was cold enough to worry a brass monkey. Out of the water, with a hint of summer on its way, the temperature was enough to reinforce the term “steamer” wetsuit. The waves were decent for the first heat but after the wind died down, for most of the second round heats the wave quality dropped with it.

Craig “El Mexican” Palmer and Darrell Young both found some lumber on the beach with Craig having to dig some out from under his toenail while Darrell just lost some bark.
Corey Barnes (Shultz) scored quite a few good waves in his first heat winning first place but Mitch Conwell continued to dominate with his usual flair, yet again taking out the first place overall against all the other round one winners.

It took until the second heat for Artie, Liz, Regan, Gavin and Olivia to adjust to the cold water and warm up enough to show stronger performances in their second round.

We assembled on the beach for a group photo for the 2018 OBMC calendar but we will take one more at the October comp and choose the best one for next year’s calendar.

Afterwards Craig Coulton, dragging a leg rope behind him while carrying his board up the beach from the group photo fell foul of the dreaded leg rope tugging sand shark.

Mitch took his young son out on the board with his son mastering the art of the ‘tall tales of barrels’.

Angi brought Amy along for the day to show off her expanding family. We wish them both all the delights of parenthood.

OBMC Newsletter – September 2017

Next contest: 7am, Sunday, 24th September.

Preso’s Report

Surfers please note that we revert back to a 7am start as of this Sunday’s contest.

I am still getting queries regarding both the annual Long John Memorial Old Mal Day and the end of year presentation night. Both are to be held on the same day, Sunday, 26th November. At the Old Mal, we will run the bbq on the beach as per a usual comp (with a few alterations to the  memu) rather than having the seafood lunch back at the Ettalong Bowling Club like we previously did, as we need to set up for the presentation night which will be held in the Ettalong Alfresco Brasserie.

With only two more point score contests to go, Mitch Conwell has a firm grasp on the 2017 club championship with an aggregate of 351 points, 21 points ahead of myself on 327 points, while Garry Halliday (293) is in a very close tussle with Garth Willison (289) for third spot, remembering that each surfer’s worst monthly result is deducted at season’s end. With both Garth and Hands having already missed a comp throughout the year, only Mitch and myself will drop points so it is going to make the battle for second place very interesting.

Mitch continued his dominance, winning both the August comp and the postponed July contest which was held the following week. The results for the final of the August 27 contest were Mitch Conwell 1st, Garry Halliday 2nd and Craig Coulton 3rd. The postponed July contest final again saw Mitch the victor from Garth Willison, Craig Coulton and Ron Stockings who was making his first appearance in a final for 2017.

For those of you not at the last contest and haven’t yet heard, we have a new champion amonst us…. Gavin “The Champ” Edwards had his first amateur boxing match a few weeks ago which he won by knockout in the second round. Gavin then proceeded to announce his retirement. A very smart move – undefeated champion!

Tony Gilbert will most likely be taking the photo for the 2018 calendar at Sunday’s comp so if you want to be in it, be there.

Note that as of Monday night 18/9/17,  a NE swell is predicted for this coming Sunday so there is a chance we may have to move the comp to Killcare so keep an eye on your phone Sunday morning for a message.

See ya’s Sunday,

Craig C.

OBMC Newsletter – July 2017

OBMC Newsletter – July 2017

Upcoming events
Next contest – 8am, Sunday, 30th July.

Preso’s Report

You may have noticed the change in the newsletter title page which features the updated OBMC logo which now includes the year the club was established. After a discussion with Corey Barnes (Big Boys Boards) at last year’s presentation night, we established that it was 1989, not 1991 as previously thought when the OBMC first commenced competition independent of Umina Boardriders. Corey was also the OBMC’s original major sponsor with “Hyperactive” when the club was first established.

Terry Wilson has kindly offered to take on the vacant role of ‘head judge’ in season 2018. Terry will complete the Surfing NSW level one judging course later this year before commencing his new role next season. Hopefully under Terry’s guidance we will get more consistency with the judging.

Season 2017 is fast drawing to a close with only four more contests remaining in which to accumulate points. Remember that Sunday, Novemer 26 is both the Long John Memorial Old Mal Day and will be followed by the 2017 presentation night that evening in the Alfresco Brasserie inside the Ettalong Bowling Club.

Hands’ June contest report

With terrible conditions plaguing comp days this year, Craig and myself decided that extreme measures were needed to turn the tables. After long discussions,  it was decided that only a human sacrifice to the surf Gods was required. No less than a virgin would suffice for this challenge. Unfortunately Craig searched Umina for two weeks but failed to find one. It must have been the thought that counted because comp day came around and we awoke to the best winter’s day on record with warm offshore winds and a good swell running. Craig used his eye on the sky and picked the only rip that worked through from the high tide to low.

First heat in the water and Craig Coulton dished out a surfing lesson, getting two stand up barrels and not even getting his hair wet, scoring two nine point rides. During the heat a member of the public walked up to the tent to ask if that was Jerry Lopez in the line up.

Heat two found the clash of the last comp finalists, Gavin up against Mitch with the crowd on their feet shouting “Gav, Gav, Gav” as he entered the water. Unfortunately he couldn’t repeat last comp’s performance with Mitch proving too good taking out the heat.

Heat three had Craig Palmer in a crafty disguise. He came dressed as the famous Mexican surfer Pedro Gomez Palmer. The other surfers didn’t fall for his tricks though with all of them beating him. Craig was very disappointed in the result. To add to his misfortunes, even the moustache he picked out turned out to be the wrong colour. Garth produced another strong performance, taking a liking to the rights on offer to win the heat.

Heat four was a one horse race with Bryce winning the heat with some of the best nose rides of the first round. Bryce, throwing down the gauntlet to the rest of the crew.

Round two opened up with the 1st’s going in on the dropping tide with some of the bigger sets now closing out. Mitch got very busy early in the heat with some high scores on the smaller lefts, with the rights just starting up on cue, opening the door for Bryce who took full advantage, bringing home the heat with some great rides and just beating Mitch. Craig C also got some good scoring rides but couldn’t catch the ‘Big Guns’. Garth also caught some nice rights but just couldn’t catch Craig.

Jack (Mark Williams) opened up with some nice lefts and looked to have won the battle of the 2nd’s until the surf gods dished up two little rippers for me with only minutes left in the heat. Bad luck for Jack and good luck for me! Mark Rylands held off Olivia’s challenge to take third, Olivia fourth.

In the 3rd’s Darrell played a waiting game, picking off better waves than the other contestants in the heat. It paid off with a win over last comp ‘Champ Gavin’. Josh Stewart in third, John Rodney fourth.

The 4th’s found Tony Irwin surprising everyone with a great ride getting some high scores from all the judges, putting the pressure on the other surfers. It proved to be a heat winner with the others struggling as all the bigger waves began closing out. Terry second, Ozzie third and Regan fourth.

In the 5th’s Ron ‘Stocko’ was king, putting the icing on the cake with his last wave. Al Copelin had the ‘Mexican’ covered for second spot, Artie fourth, Rob in fifth, Liz sixth and Trevor a dissapointing seventh.

We all had a great day with some fantastic rides. Still wondering what happened to winter??

See ya all next comp!

OBMC Newsletter – June 2017

Upcoming events
Next contest – 8am, Sunday, 25th June.

Preso’s Report
Three OBMC surfers progressed to the finals of the 2017 Crescent Head Malibu Classic. Angus Mackay was the best performer of the trio, placing 4th in the Over 50’s Logger, while Graham Judd finished in 6th place in the Over 55’s and Angi Smith 7th in the final of the Over 35’s Ladies.
One result I neglected to publish in last month’s newsletter was that of Graeme Carroll’s 2nd place in the final of the ‘Big Boys’ event at the Byron Bay Malibu Classic back in April. Sorry big fella. Congratulations on a great result.

May contest report.
Some fun waves were on offer for the postponed May contest held on June 4 but as usually happens when a comp is postponed, the numbers were down considerably. With ‘Sharpy’ once again warming us all up with his delicious pea and ham soup, all sixteen competitors were raring to go. With only three round one heats it was going to be a very quick day, so to speed things up even more, contest director Garry Halliday came up with the brilliant idea of combining the firsts and seconds in the final, along with the thirds and fourths together so only three heats were required in the second round also.

Birthday boy, Mitch Conwell was a short priced favourite to take maximum points for the day but in the final he must have had his mind on the awaiting chocolate cake. It was certainly one of the most enjoyable finals I have ever competed in (besides getting my bum smacked) with each surfer going wave for wave in a very competitive, yet super friendly, encouraging manner.

Gavin Edwards claimed his first final win since joining the club, continuing his rapid improvement over the past 12 months. Luke Dalton, another whose surfing has improved dramatically lately, edged out Garry Halliday to take second place, with Mitch in fourth, Garth Willison in fifth and yours truly in sixth place.

The girls again showed the men how it’s done in the minor finals with Deb Stening winning the thirds from Ron Stockings, while Regan Russell had one of his best results to claim third place ahead of Daryl Anderson, John Rodney and Alan Copelin.

Olivia Edwards continued her recent good form to win the final of the fifth’s from Artie Kopylov in second place, Mel Sharpe in third and Rob Baranic fourth place.

See you all next Sunday!

Cheers,

Craig C.

OBMC Newsletter – May 2017

Upcoming events

Next contest – 8am, Sunday, 28th May

Preso’s Report

Three OBMC surfers progressed to the finals of the 2017 Magoo Charity Classic held at Soldiers Beach over the weekend of the 6th & 7th May.

In the Open 9ft it was Mitch Conwell flying the flag for the OBMC, placing 6th against some very tough opposition. Bryce Williams was another to record a 6th place in the Open Logger event, won by ex OBMC member Tom Payne. The best result for the club though was from Mark Williams who placed 3rd in the final of the over 55’s. Congratulations to all who competed on the great results.

We wish all OBMC surfers who are competing in the Crescent Head Malibu Classic this week the very best of luck and hopefully ‘Huey’ will do the right thing and provide some decent waves for the event.

The Ettalong Bowling Club is again putting on their annual ‘Beer School’ whereby you get to sample a variety of delicious foods and learn which style of beer are best suited to those foods. You will also learn how to make the different styles of beer should you choose to ‘home brew’. Each beer you sample is not just a taste, but a stubbie, so don’t plan on driving home. The club does run a courtesy bus. Last year was lots of fun and laughter. ‘Beer School’ is on Sunday 4th June, commencing at 2.30pm. Tickets are $25 each but this represents great value for the quality of food, along with the number of different beers you get to sample. It would be good if we can get a group together to enjoy the afternoon. Let me know if you are keen.

April contest report

It was great to see long time member Phil Bruce make a welcome return to the surfing scene after a few years absence. Phil’s surfing unfortunately has suffered a little during the break but with regular stints back in the water, I’m sure he will be competitive again in no time.

Thirty one surfers contested the April competition held in rapidly varying conditions in size, shape and direction. Mitch Conwell increased his lead in the club championship winning the final from Bryce Williams with Garry (Hands) Halliday in third place. Richie McClelland, Garth Willison and Mark Williams made up the balance of the first round winners.

The Edwards family duo of dad Gavin and daughter Olivia continued their rapidly improving form of late with Gavin taking out the 2nd’s from Craig Coulton and Corey Barnes while Olivia won the 4th’s from Deb Stening and Tony Irwin. Darrell Young won the 3rd’s ahead of Ron Stockings and Alan Copelin while Josh Stewart was too good for the rest of the field, winning the 5th’s decisively from Rob Baranic in second and Daryl (Ozzie) Anderson in third place.

Cheers,

Craig C.
